Interested in joining The Quiet Pond? We want you and your magic!

“Friend.”

You look down and see Xiaolong tugging gently at your pants. Her bright pink gills are a little droopy today, so you ask her what is wrong.

“I love looking after the pond here, but sometimes it gets tiring looking after everyone. And there’s just so much magic here and so much to share, that I don’t think I can do it alone.” She plops down onto the ground, putting her staff down, and rubs at her pink gills. You sit next to her. “Do you know if any magical beings who might want to call the pond at home? I’d even share my xiaolongbao with them.”

You think quietly to yourself for a moment. “I don’t,” you say, “but let’s look for them together.”

Warm hellos, hugs, or hi-fives to you, friends!

For a long time now, I’ve considered the idea of co-blogging. Blogging can be a very lonely experience; I blogged for five years by myself, and although blogging was indeed rewarding, there were times where I felt alone in my blogging journey. I had a good talk with Jeann from Happy Indulgence months ago, and she shared with me her experiences of having a co-blogger — someone to help you out, alleviate the pressure of blogging, can support you and you them, and someone who could share all the joys of blogging with you. As much as I like to work independently, I want to give co-blogging a go; I want someone to join the Pond with me.

If you’re interested, read on!

Who am I looking for?

I’m looking for one to two (1 – 2) co-bloggers to join me in running The Quiet Pond.

  1. One co-blogger will be running and writing posts for the ‘Book News’ feature, either once a week or once every two weeks.
This position is a priority over the position below.
  2. Another co-blogger who will contribute content (i.e., write book reviews, write their own content, etc.).

Moreover, I am looking for co-bloggers with the following:

  • You must have a passion for reading and promoting diverse books.
  • Great written communication and can communicate well with other co-bloggers.
  • Ability to give feedback and be responsive and open to feedback.
  • Be creative and can contribute to the narratives at The Quiet Pond.
  • For general co-bloggers: Be able to contribute at least 1 – 2 posts every two weeks.

More information about the co-blogger role

Tell me more about the ‘Book News’ feature.

At present, the ‘Book News’ feature (definitely not its official and final name!) will be a weekly or fortnightly post that collates book news and information. It will highlight:

  1. new book releases/book birthdays; including a short blurb about what it’s about, its cover, and why you are excited/others should be excited about it
  2. announcements for new books
  3. (optional) another project that is in line with the ‘Book News’, and is something we can discuss

If you can only/would prefer to commit two weeks (rather than one week), this will not disadvantage you. Likewise, if you would prefer to commit once a week, this will not advantage you! Please choose the option that fits with your capabilities, and be consistent with the commitment. I welcome you to be as creative as you’d like and to make the feature yours.

Do I only have to promote/review diverse books? What about non-diverse books?

A major priority for me at The Quiet Pond is to promote diverse books. Inevitably, we will review or promote other books – and that is absolutely okay – but I’d like the majority of books reviewed or promoted to be diverse – let’s say, as a loose guideline of 75% diverse and 25% non-diverse. (To be clear, this does not mean you have to give every diverse book a positive and glowing review! Examining diverse books with a critical lens is important as well.)

If you aren’t really interested in reading diverse books, then this co-blogging position may not be the right fit for you.

If I am interested in doing the ‘Book News’ feature, am I expected to write reviews as well?

No. If you are the ‘Book News’ co-blogger, then the ‘Book News’ is your priority. However, if you would like to write book reviews for The Quiet Pond, you absolutely can.

Do I need to be able to draw/provide my own graphics to be your co-blogger?

No. I don’t mind drawing and organising all the graphics (including banners, illustrations within posts, etc.). However, if you are an artist and/or are experienced with Photoshop and would like to contribute to the graphics in The Quiet Pond, we could work together to do the graphics – I’m open to ideas.

Can I have a character that represents me in The Quiet Pond?

Of course! I’d be happy to draw a character for you that represents you.

If you would not like an animal character to represent you in this blog, please say so in the application form. This will not disadvantage your application as well.

I am a student/have work/life commitments/circumstances that might affect my ability to contribute. Can I still apply?

I understand that people face a variety of circumstances, and I firmly believe that you should put your life/career/school/health/etc. first. In saying that though, if you foresee that your other commitments will affect your ability to contribute consistently, please think carefully before applying. If your unavailability is only periodic, then all I ask is that you be open and transparent with that, and we can go from there.

Do I have to have previous experience as a book blogger?

Absolutely not. If you haven’t book blogged before, we can work together to make sure you feel comfortable with how blogging works, how to format things, how things work and are structured, etc. We’ll figure it out together.

Will I receive remuneration (pay) for my contributions?

Unfortunately I do not have the capacity to pay anyone to be my co-blogger and for the content that they write. However, I welcome co-bloggers to include links to their own ko-fi in the content that they write/contribute at The Quiet Pond.

Have any further questions? Feel free to leave a question in the comments or email me at thequietpond@gmail.com. But if you don’t have any questions, please complete the Google Form below.

Applications are now closed. Thank you to all who applied. Co-bloggers will be announced something either in mid-December or in the new year.
