Young adult books that center on friendships have my whole heart. I love seeing characters fall in love and discover the joy and heartbreak and beauty of romantic love for the first time, especially those falling in love are teens of colour. But, I also do love the occasional book that centers entirely on a friendship, such as Piecing Me Together and The Black Veins. And if you are like me and are craving stories about friendships too, then you are in for a treat: because we have a friend visiting us today for Black History Month who wrote a book entirely on friendships.

If you love middle-grade stories that tackle social justice and activism, then friend, meet Take Back the Block. You may have seen me yelling and proclaiming my eternal love for this book; a book about a young Black boy who comes face-to-face with his neighbourhood at risk of gentrification. Black History Month – Interview with Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé, Author of Ace of Spades; On Black Horror, Dark Academia, and Her Exciting Debut

I have had the privilege of already reading Ace of Spades, an upcoming young-adult thriller from debut author Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé, and I have already called it one of my favourite books of 2021. Set in an elite high school, the story follows two Black teens as they are taunted, their secrets spilled by an anonymous texter who seems set on ruining their lives. Ace of Spades is absolutely stunning – and jaw-dropping and shocking and it will, as the cliche goes, make you hold a breath you won’t realise that you are holding.

Friends, do you love dragons? Do you love the idea of sweeping fantasies that explore colonialism and oppression? And a story where the entire cast is Black? If you said yes, then gather around, because I think you’re going to want to learn more about Conquest, an Afro-futurist urban fantasy.

Black History Month – Interview with Ciannon Smart, Author of Witches Steeped in Gold; On Her Jamaican-Inspired Fantasy Debut, Worldbuilding, and its Gorgeous Cover

I love reading fantasies that are clearly written from their writer’s hearts. There’s something so special and wonderful when you read a story and you can feel pieces of the author’s love and soul in the words. Witches Steeped in Gold is one of my most anticipated books of 2021, and I think, after reading this interview that I did with Ciannon, the author of Witches Steeped in Gold, you will agree that her debut is such a book – one that is a book of her heart and a story she loved telling.
